Psalm 5:3-7 (ESV)

 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.

Psalm 2:11-12 (ESV)

11 Serve the Lord with fear,
    and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,
    lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
    for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

I Will Recount Your Wonderful Deeds

To the choirmaster: according to Muth-labben. A Psalm of David.

 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
    I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
 I will be glad and exult in you;
    I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

Hope that Steadies in these Difficult Days

How tragic and troubling the last month or so has been in our country!  Whether from the destructive forces of hurricanes, the deadly bullets from a madman, or the devastating power of firestorms, we’ve been stunned by how quickly lives and lifestyles can permanently be changed.
These events remind us how fragile, brief, and dependent our lives on earth truly are.  Moreover, we should also be reminded that, “… it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Heb. 9:27), and “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:31). Notwithstanding earthly trauma, what could be more terrifying than experiencing the righteous wrath of God for all eternity?
Beloved, as God’s blood-bought people, by faith we have the full assurance and strong encouragement of eternal HOPE! This hope springs from our secure salvation in Jesus Christ, and is an “anchor of the soul” amid the storms and griefs of life (see Heb. 6:9-20).
I pray your souls may indeed be steadied in these difficult days, and also readied to bear faithful witness of Jesus Christ.  All of us are surrounded by many who have no true hope, and who desperately need to hear the life-giving truths of the Gospel. May God help us be bold, compassionate, winsome, and clear in speaking His truth in love. May we also serve those in need in practical and tangible ways, rightly adorning the Gospel.
And may we embrace the truth afresh that “…here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.” (Heb. 13:14)
Living in hope with you,

Isaiah 40:25-28 (ESV)

25 To whom then will you compare me,
    that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
    who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
    calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
    and because he is strong in power,
    not one is missing.

27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
    and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
    and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.

Beginning the Book of Hebrews

As a Christian, do you ever get discouraged? With your circumstances, with struggles, with your sin? Yeah…I do too!
Our holy and gracious Father knows you and I are easily tempted to be downcast. He knows we’re quick to shrink back from believing and living in light of His great promises and provision in Jesus Christ.  He knows we need ongoing help, hope, and encouragement to persevere in this Christian race. Thus, because our Father is so kind and compassionate, He gave us the Book of Hebrews (along with ALL of Scripture).
When we gather this coming Lord’s Day Oct. 1, I’m planning to begin preaching through this great book (which is actually a sermon). The author tells us in Heb. 13:22 that what he’s written is a “word of exhortation”. He wants to encourage and spur wavering Christians on to walk by faith in all Christ is, and all He’s done for us.  The theme could be summarized this way:  Keep at it; Jesus is worth it!
I hope you’ll join us Sunday as we begin this journey through Hebrews together.  God purposes to encourage us through His word, and in our gathering to “stir up one another to love and good deeds” (Heb. 10:24). I can’t wait!!
Grace upon grace,

Psalm 145:17-21 (ESV)

17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways
    and kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
    he also hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord preserves all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
    and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
