River City Grace

Who We Are : Membership

At River City Grace, we view church membership as a “public affirmation of a mutual commitment to one another as believers in this local church.” Our convictions are based on the following points:

  1. When a person comes to saving faith in Jesus Christ and receives all of the spiritual blessings that God imparts (Eph. 1 & 2), he/she is concurrently baptized by the Spirit of God into the body of Christ – His church (1 Cor. 12:12-13). This is a spiritual, inextricable reality. Believers don’t choose to become a member of His church at some point after salvation. They are automatically a part of His church as a result of being regenerated by Him.
  2. The Body of Christ has both a spiritual, invisible, universal dynamic, as well as a tangible, visible, local expression. The church universal finds its expression in local assemblies (as identified throughout the Book of Acts, the New Testament Epistles, and Revelation 2 & 3), and local assemblies find their identity in the church.
  3. God has prescribed and clearly defined the order, structure and functions for local assemblies of the church universal. Local churches are autonomous, yet mutually accountable to the Word of God, organized, have Elders and Deacons, discipline their own members, hold regular meetings, and share in the work of the Great Commission (Mt. 18:15-17; 28:19-20; Acts 2:41-46; 20:28; Phil. 1:1; 1 Tim. 3:1-15; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Pet. 2:9-10).
  4. As a member of Christ’s body, every believer has God-given privileges and responsibilities that he/she is called to live out in the context of a local church. All of the Epistles in the New Testament clearly demonstrate this truth. Therefore, while every believer is a member of the church universal, and, therefore, has relationships with other believers that go beyond any local church, each believer nonetheless has a God-given responsibility to be significantly devoted to a local church.

Therefore, all believers have a privilege and responsibility to publicly and wholeheartedly identify themselves with and commit themselves to a local assembly of Christ’s universal church. This should be done through whatever identification or membership process the leadership of that local assembly has determined. Through such purposeful commitment to a local church, each believer affirms and upholds his/her identity as a child of God, and thus a member in the family of God.

The membership process at River City Grace involves attending a Membership Class (the class usually meets during our “Equipping Hour” on Sunday mornings; the length of this interactive class is determined by class size), completion of a Membership Questionnaire, and meeting with one of our Elders. The class provides an opportunity for prospective members to learn more about River City Grace in terms of our doctrinal convictions, philosophy and structure of ministry, history, etc. Those who satisfactorily complete the process are publicly affirmed as New Members at River City Grace during a Sunday morning corporate worship service.

Membership Packets, which outline and discuss this process in more detail, are available through the Church Office.
