Purpose

The main purpose of mission support at River City Grace is to glorify God by obeying His command to go to all nations and make disciples of Jesus Christ. Our mission activities fully support the overall purpose of our church, which is: “To see God exalted as His grace and truth in Jesus Christ abounds in and overflows to more and more people.”

Mission activity is God-centered, not man-centered. Our message is not to focus primarily on our “experience or the needs of people”, but the excellency of God and the salvation that He offers to undeserving sinners.

Scriptural Basis

Our missionary work and support at River City Grace is governed by the word of God as revealed exclusively and completely in the Holy Scriptures. The Bible is our sole authority, and it governs our decisions in carrying out the work of missions.

(Note: All scriptures from New American Standard Bible – Updated Edition 1995.)
Matthew 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 9:36-38 “Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.'”

Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Acts 1:8 “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Romans 10:13-15 “for whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”

Philippians 1:27 “Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”

1 Peter 2:9-10 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

3 John 5-8 “Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the brethren, and especially when they are strangers; and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. For they went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers with the truth.”

Mission Beliefs

River City Grace believes each believer must have a passion for missions, and that this passion must be the result of who God is, what He has done for us, and what He desires from each one of us. As God’s love is manifested among us as believers, His excellencies are more loudly proclaimed through us!

River City Grace believes every believer can accomplish the Lord’s command to reach out to others with the gospel by regularly Praying for those involved in missions, Giving of their talents and financial resources, and Going to the field themselves. Every believer should ask the following questions:

  1. Am I passionate for missions – for worshipping God?
  2. How is God calling me to support those who go?
  3. How or where may God be calling me to go?

River City Grace believes that mission activity is not limited to just supporting the work of others. We believe each one of us, as believers, has a responsibility to be on mission in our families, in our workplaces, in our neighborhoods, etc.

River City Grace believes the work of support is a matter of faithfulness. It is multi-faceted; it involves intentional effort; it is far-reaching; it is motivated by love; it is a shared task; it reflects God’s character; and it is a privileged obligation.

River City Grace believes the Lord Jesus Christ has given the Church her marching orders. We are commanded to “make disciples” of all people groups. We seek to carry out this task in accordance with the principles outlined in scripture by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

Goals and Priorities for River City Grace’s Mission Ministry

To proclaim the Gospel for the purpose of seeing people trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

To cultivate within River City Grace an awareness of the necessity for intercessory prayer for our missionaries and church members engaged in mission activities through mission moments, mission prayer requests, a mission conference, and newsletter articles.

To mobilize the members of River City Grace for ministry and see them fulfill their spiritual responsibility to missions.

To develop, send, and support members from River City Grace as the Lord calls and equips them.

To maintain reciprocal accountability between River City Grace and those missionaries and mission agencies that we support.

To focus our mission efforts and support primarily where the Lord directs, given the knowledge that River City Grace, as a body, can not meet all of the needs that exist in the world.

Financial Support for Missions

The primary instrument for financial giving to mission activities supported by River City Grace is through our Seed Sower Ministry. Each fall, individuals and families are asked to prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to the Seed Sower Ministry for the upcoming calendar year. Those desiring to participate can do so by completing a Seed Sower Commitment Form. Once these forms are collected and totaled, the Mission Commission proposes to the Elders what percentage of the funds received will be distributed to each ministry the church supports. Once approved, the Mission Commission notifies each of the ministries of the financial support they can expect for the coming year.

The Seed Sower Ministry is operated on the premise that it is more beneficial to provide a significant level of financial support to a small number of missionaries and mission agencies than it is to provide a minimal level of support to a large number.

The Seed Sower Ministry is strictly voluntary and should not impact someone’s regular giving to the General Fund of the church. 100% of giving designated for “Seed Sower” or “Missions” goes directly to the missionaries and mission agencies supported by the church. Only the money actually received is disbursed at the end of each month. Whether it exceeds the amount committed or is short of the amount, all monies are distributed. Donations designated for Seed Sower or Missions are segregated from General Fund giving and are never used to meet regular church needs.
